Guidance and counselling in Brikama Lower Basic School is done by class teachers in the classroom and a group of senior teachers and young teachers led by the senior Religious leaders. As well the student council know as prefects have representatives in the guidance and counselling team.
The committee or team help to address negative behaviours by pupils including absentism and lateness. Pupils with academic difficulties are counselled by both colleagues and committee members. The committee takes active role in conflicts among friends in the school both pupils and staff. Weekly counselling is done during assembly and moral sessions on discipline and focus on learning.
Challenges
The committee though very active, lacks some basic knowledge in guidance and counselling as they are not formally trained. Some behaviors done by children are inherited from home as such most children avoid been counselled as their parents do not give them much support on good behavior and as such they fear been. Home pressure on some children are challenges face by the committee.
Strategies
The leadership strategies that can help counselling into daily school life is key in school system. During the school bade workshop, teachers are sensitised on basic counselling skills. This helps teachers support children in the classroom as well as those teachers on duty at assembly period. The community is task to counsell children at PTA meetings.
Support given to teachers and staff to identify and respond to learners and behavioural needs
The school provides induction and basic skill trainings for teachers and staff to easily identify and spot out signs and warnings on behavioral needs. Regular check- ins on learners behavior and caregivers are involve on time when certain behavioral issues persists.
