1A.WASH is a component in school and its importance can not be over emphasise. The current WASH in my school that is working well are as follows;
a. Clean Drinking Water: The school is fortunate to have a borehole that serve both students and teachers during school hours. There are numerous tap heads within the school premises that easily accessible to the students when they drink, perform ablution or want to use the washroom.
b. Toilet facility: Sanitation in the school is also adequate for both learners and staffs during sessions. The ratio of female students against toilets is 25:1 whereas the male student's ratio is 30:1 toilet.
However, the gaps in the school is security. The school is open to intruders, being animals and and humans. The school is not fence and animals used the premises as their base especially during weekends. On the other hand, its equally used as a high way for motorists, cyclists as ox-carts even during sessions which is very dangerous as collusion can occur between the the passers-by and learners unexpectedly. Taps that are also meant to be wisely used by those that need water is also abused during weekends as well as the toilets.
B. I established a WASH committee that are responsible of monitoring ,supervision, coordination and maintenance of damages. A policy is established that govern the coordination of WASH. Prominent personalities within the community in collaboration with the School Management Committee were sensitised and challenged to assist in the smooth management of WASH even during weekends and holidays.
C. Hygiene, this component challenged my thinking most, because there can not be any meaningful development in hygiene if the school is not secured with a permanent fence. Controlling the intruders is a major issue that can jeopardise the narratives.
The three concrete actions I plan to take are:
1. To mobilise the Mothers Club for monthly cleaning exercise that can reduce the animal dungs and other unwanted robust that could be found within the school premises.
2. To collaborate with the youths of the village to provide the school with a temporal fence before permanent fence is achieved.
3. To re-enforce the presence of the care taker even during the holidays as well as weekends.
