Unit 11 Discussion Forum: WASH and Leadership

As the head of Yundum Barracks Lower Basic School, it falls upon me to prioritize WASH as a crucial aspect of my leadership. At present, our institution is equipped with access to clean water and operational toilets that facilitate regular hygiene practices. Nonetheless, we face ongoing issues such as the overcrowding of latrines, insufficient hand washing facilities, and unreliable soap supplies. To enhance hygiene awareness, I have initiated regular sanitation discussions during school assemblies, established a WASH club, and encouraged teachers to oversee the daily cleaning activities. Additionally, we collaborate closely with the School Management Committee and engage parents to assist with upkeep. One significant hurdle we encounter is the scarcity of funds for upgrading infrastructure. To tackle this issue, I am actively involved in advocacy efforts through the cluster system and seek assistance from NGOs and other partners, underscoring the connection between WASH services, student attendance, and the dignity of girls.
