Engaging learners, staffs and the community in maintaining standards and facilities works well when everyone feels informed, responsible and motivated. The inclusive approaches are key.
1. Engaging learners
WASH clubs ; form learners-led clubs responsible for promoting handwashing, clean toilets and cleaned school environment. Trained selected learners to demonstrate proper handwashing and waste disposal
Create activities; use songs, dramas, poems and debate in local languages to promote hygiene messages. Reward clean students to promote or to encourage positive competition.
2. Engage staff
Clear roles; teachers on duties are assign specific hygiene responsibilities when students are out to eat and ancillary staff are responsible for cleaning the toilets and the school environment.
Role modelling; teachers and ancillary staff practice good hygiene by hand washing after using the toilet and before eating. WASH issues and hygiene are also agendas included in staff meeting
3. Engaging the community
. Parents- Teachers Association [PTA]
involve parents in decision -making monitoring facilities, and mobilizing resources . Engage village heads , mothers club and women groups to reinforce hygiene in the school environment
Partnership with local health workers NGOs to provide talks, bins or repairs when the facilities are damage
4. Creating ownership and sustainability
Participatory planning; include learners staffs and community members in identifying hygiene gaps and solutions. Use simple monitoring tools to check the toilets, handwashing after using the toilets and before eating and make sure learners throw their waste in the waste bin. Display hygiene rules with pictures near the toilets and kitchen for children to see.
5. Leadership support
Constant supervision; i regularly inspect facilities and provide feedback. Hygiene standards are integrated nto the school rules and child protection policies eg children should not come to school with dirty uniforms unkept hair and also not throw litters on the ground. There is funds for soap bleach and omo to make the facilities clean.
Engagement is strongest when hygiene is learner-led, staff supported and community owned. This shared responsibility helps ensure hygiene is maintained and sustained over time.
