The situation involved a learner being targeted with hurtful messages in a class WhatsApp, which led to withdrawal and anxiety at school. It made me feel concerned, sad, and frustrated by how seriously digital harassment affects learners. The experience reinforced the need foe schools to promote respect, digital safety, and strong reporting systems.
. The key leadership qualities needed are empathy, fairness, integrity, and strong communication. Leaders must act courageously, respond promptly, and ensure accountability while protecting and supporting learners. These qualities help ensure a caring, just, and safe school environment.
. Cultural beliefs and biases can sometimes encourage silence or minimising GBV, but awareness of this helps prioritise survivor safety. Past experiences increase sensitivity, empathy, and prompt action. Self-awareness supports fair, professional, and just responses guided by policy.
Reflection on Gender-Based violence and Digital Harassment in Schools
I recall a situation in a school setting where a learner experienced digital harassment through hurtful and humiliating messages shared in a class WhatsApp group. Although the messages were clearly seen in school. The learner became quiet, withdrawn, and showed signs of anxiety during lessons.
The situation made me feel deeply concerned and saddened. It was upsetting to realize how quickly digital harassment can damaged a learner`s confidence and emotional wellbeing. I also felt frustrated that such behaviour is sometimes treated lightly because to happens, online, even though the impact is very real and serious.
The experience reminded me that schools have a responsibility to address not only physical but also gender-based violence and technology-facilitated abuse. Learners need to connected to school life. When these issues are ignored, victim may feel powerless and unsupported.
Reflecting on this experience has strengthened my belief in the importance of clear policies on GBV and digital safety. It also highlights the need for regular awareness sessions for learners, staff, and parents, as well as confidential reporting mechanisms. School must promote a culture of respect, empathy, and zero tolerance for abuse to ensure all learners feel protected and valued.
