- How have you used SIPs in your school to guide development and decision-making?
By developing an SIP which is SMARTIE in nature and which aims to improve the school holistically. When the SIP is approved, I would sit with the stakeholders again to refresh their minds about the prioritised areas and the actions we have developed collectively. I would encourage everyone to work towards the realisation of the SIP. The School Management Team would conduct monitoring and evaluation of the implementation of the SIP periodically.
- What strategies do you use to involve teachers, learners, parents, and community members in the planning process?
I would collect all the necessary data about the school. Analyse the data that needs to be analysed, and then invite the stakeholders to develop the SIP based on the data. The statistical data form for school improvement planning would also be filled before the stakeholder meeting. That form would also serve as a guide. Then, the stakeholders would be encouraged to provide their inputs during the development process.
- What challenges have you faced in implementing SIPs, and how have you overcome them?
The key challenge is resource constraint. In some communities the schools would depend almost entirely on the school improvement grants. The school athletics championship and the interhouse competition are very costly. At times schools would spend big portions of their SIG to sports and leaving some prioritised areas of the SIP without funding. In some instances, we would have to forgo the inter-house even though the teachers and students would not like it.
I believe schools should be provided with additional funds for the conduct of inter-house because both teachers and students see it their right to do.
- Can you share an example of a successful initiative that emerged from your SIP? What made it work?
When the students’ performance shows persistent downward trend, we developed actions to improve the results. One such action was to conduct extra classes. Some of the teachers bought the idea and started doing it as early as October. Now, the results have improved significantly. We just have to keep up the momentum.
