1. The state WASH facilities in my school is school and are judiciously used for their purpose. The school has enough water for drinking, performing ablution, as well as at the washroom. Toilet facilities is also enough for the students an teaching staff. The school compound is clean and hygiene for students and staff.
I met the school without enough and clean drinking water, they were using a hand pump which is difficult to get water from. With my intervention with other stakeholders the school is fortunate to get a good borehole which serves beyond the school.
2.Its not easy to overcome all and sundry at once, I engage the School Management Committee which has a component of parents ,students and teaching staff through an SMC meeting where we laid down WASH policy and everyone is giving an area to focus on. The community leaders are also engaged as a school can not succeed in maintaining hygiene and facilities in the absence of the community. They are also encouraged to add their voice.
3. My main challenges in implementing WASH is that school is not fence. Here, any development can be tampered by the intruders out of school hours. Maintaining hygiene standards and facilities is only doable during session. I sincerely engaged the prominent elders with the SMC to assist in maintaining standard hygiene and facilities during holidays when all teachers will be away.
I engaged the health personnel for health talks during our open days where parents will be present. A peer health club is also initiated for girls to be given assistance should it case of experiencing Menstrual cycle whilst at school.
I also wrote to the council of elders and MRC Holland for a permanent fence which could also maintain high standard of hygiene and facilities in the school.
