Reflection on WASH in Gambian schools:
My school has made progress in providing access to clean water, but sanitation facilities remain a challenge. We have functional water supply systems, but toilets and handwashing stations are insufficient, particularly for girls and students with disabilities. I've led initiatives to improve handwashing practices and would like to lead efforts to upgrade sanitation facilities.
In time of engaging learners, staff, and community, this how I do it.
I engage learners through school peer club initiatives, and incorporating WASH topics into the curriculum. staff are involved in promoting hygiene standards, and we collaborate with the community through clean-up campaigns and awareness-raising events.
Some of the challenges and solutions are as follows:
My challenges include limited resources, inadequate infrastructure, and behavioural change. I addressed these by leveraging partnerships with local organizations, seeking for donations and promoting community-led initiatives.
A school leader can advocate for better WASH support from local authorities or development partners in the following ways:
1. Building relationships with local authorities and development partners.
2. Presenting evidence-based proposals highlighting WASH benefits.
3. Mobilizing community support and demonstrating commitment to WASH initiatives.
4. Seeking partnerships for resources mobilization and technical assistance.
