1. The current state of WASH facilities in my school, though limited in toilet facilities, is well managed in terms of proper hygiene. Handwashing stations are also limited. We don't experience water because of a functional borehole
Improvements done so far are the following:
Monthly cleansing activities
Regular cleaning of the toilets (morning and afternoon)
Handwashing areas increased using plastic kettles.
Improvements I would like to lead:
Advocating for additional toilets
Making of the reusable sanitary pads
2. Engaging learners, staff, and the community in maintaining hygiene standards and facilities is crucial.
Learners are engaged by forming peer discussions and debates and sharing ideas through the WASH clubs. Staff are engaged in WASH training practices, and the community is engaged in community/school cleansing and sometimes support on WASH initiatives.
3 Challenges faced in implementing WASH initiatives:
Limited resources in terms of sanitary materials and inadequate toilet facilities
I address these by prioritizing based on needs.
4. School leaders can advocate for better WASH support from local authorities by making a needs assessment and making the distribution on a need basis. Collaborate with sister schools, as Bakau LBS has partnered with Marina International School, and we are supported by them. Build and strengthen the partnership with CSOs, NGOs, etc., to effectively advocate for WASH support.
