DISCUSSION FORUM UNIT 9 MARIE A GOMEZ
The performance management system (PMS) as a Strategic framework used by MOBSE to promote accountability improves teaching, and track school performance. As school leaders, your engagement—such as SLA, forms, templates, and manuals—is key to ensuring that performance data leads to real improvements.
1. How have you used PMS tools (e.g., SLA forms & templates or manuals) in your school to support teacher development or supervision?
The school leader, the head has an important role to play in administering the service
level agreement (SLA) forms or manuals in the school. in my school I have always
worked together with my SMT to ensure that all the teachers are well informed about.
The SLA routines, practices, and expectations of the school. We ensure that all teachers signed the SLA form. Teachers are monitored using PM forms on a weekly basis. This is followed by analyzing and interpreting the performance of every teacher. This data will help us to know where every teacher strength lives and where improvements are needed. These analyses are shared with the whole staff so that they know when they have performed to expectations and where they have fallen short.
pedagogic support is given to those in need, through staff development programs
such as workshops, mentoring programs, etc. SMTs and experienced mentors who
are able to form positive relationships with the staff or teachers have been task to
Give encouragement and supportive but honest feedback.
2. what challenges have you faced in collecting or interpreting PMS data and how have you addressed them
Challenges Faced:
1. Shortcomings in Performance: The data revealed that staff sometimes "have fallen short" of expectations. Identifying these gaps is one thing; understanding and addressing the root cause is a subsequent challenge.
2. Staff Fluctuation: The documents note a challenge with the "whole staff to fluctuate," suggesting that changes in staff (either in personnel or performance levels) made consistent data collection and tracking difficult.
3. Inconsistent or Unknown Performance: A key challenge was that performance levels were "not well known," meaning there was a lack of consistent awareness or measurement of how staff were performing against expectations.
4. Data Interpretation: The process of "ongoing interpretation of performance" is explicitly mentioned, indicating that making sense of the collected data was a recognized challenge.
How These Challenges Were Addressed:
1. Transparent Communication and Shared Data: To tackle the issue of unknown performance and help with interpretation, the school made the data transparent and collective. "TTS analyses are stored with the whole staff so that they know when they have performed to expectations and when they have fallen short."
· This approach ensures everyone has access to the results, fostering a shared understanding of performance levels.
2. Standardization through Tools: The school implemented standardized PMS tools to create consistency. Specifically:
· Service Level Agreements (SLA): "We ensure that all TTS sign an SLA form." This sets clear, uniform expectations for everyone.
· Performance Monitoring (PM) Forms: "TTS are monitored using PM forms on a weekly basis." This introduces a regular and structured process for data collection.
3. In what ways can PMS be used to promote accountability and quality assurance in your school—especially in areas like learner outcomes, staff performance or resource use
The PMS form could be used to ensure accountability and quality in the
following ways:
Ensure that target lesson plans are delivered. all lesson plans are of good quality
The minimum percentage of teaching aids is attained and properly used.
Tests/assessments are conducted as planned and marked accordingly.
Supportive guidance is given to ensure improvement in teacher performance and learning outcomes.
. Monitor lesson delivery punctuality and teacher involvement
The performance management system (PMS) helps teachers and staff do better by setting clear goals, checking progress, and giving feedback. This helps everyone take responsibility and keep improving all the time.
Can you share a real scenario where applying PMS principles helped improve performance or decision-making in your school?
Before the implementation of the PMS forms, the performance of the pupils in the national assessment test (NAT) was below average. With the introduction and proper implementation of the PMS forms, pupil performance in the NAT, particularly in grade 3, has risen by 30% over the past three years.
