Using Assessment to Improve Teaching and Learning
As a headteacher, I don't just see assessment as a way to give grades. I believe it's a powerful tool to improve teaching and make sure every kid has an equal chance to succeed, no matter where they come from or how smart they are.
In our school, we use assessment data to see where kids are progressing and where they need extra help. After every test or exam, teachers and department heads get together to figure out who needs more support. We also set up extra lessons and peer groups to help those who are struggling.
I remember a time when we started using assessments like class tests and monthly tests . It really got kids more engaged and understanding better. Some teachers were skeptical at first, worried it would add to their workload. But after some training and discussions, they saw how it helped them teach better and connect with their students.
To create a school culture where everyone is focused on getting better, I encourage teachers to share their ideas, challenges, and tips at staff meetings. This way, we promote feedback-driven teaching and get kids involved in assessing their own progress. It's a two-way process, where kids don't just see assessment as a test, but as a way to learn.
I also want to reduce stress and anxiety around assessment. So we focus on regular, continuous assessment, rather than one-off exams. And we remind teachers to focus on progress, not just what kids are getting wrong.
As for digital tools, we're exploring simple options like Google Forms and WhatsApp to collect feedback and share results. Although we don't have a lot of resources, we're working towards using more digital solutions to make sure assessment is fair, flexible, and inclusive.
The key to effective assessment leadership? It's all about empathy, reflection, and working together. When we align assessment with learning and fairness, every teacher is motivated to get better and every kid can learn with confidence.
