1. In my school guidance and counselling is practiced mainly through individual and group sessions where learners receive support on academic personnel, and social issues. Teachers and school counsellor work together to identify learners who need and provide advice or referrals hers and the school counsellor help and provide advice or referrals when necessary.
However there are several challenges in implementing it effectively such as
Limited trained counsellors, making it hard o meet all learners needs.
Lack of private space for confidential sessions
Inadequate resources and materials to support counselling activities.
Stigma and lack of awareness causing some learners to avoid seeking help.
Despite these challenges the school continues to provide counselling as an essential service for learners` emotional and academic growth.
2. Here are some effective leadership strategies to help integrate counselling into to daily s chool life, even trained personnel are limited:
1. Capacity Building:
Train teachers and class tutors in basic counselling and emotional support skills so they can identify and assist learners in need.
2. Creating a supporting culture:
Promote a school environment where empathy and support, respect, and open communication are part of daily interactions among staff and learners.
3. peer counselling Programmes:
Establish a peer support system where selected students are trained to provide basic guidance and refer serious issues to adults.
4. Integrate counselling into curriculum:
Include life skills, emotional intelligence, and character education lessons in classroom activities.
5. Collaborative Approached:
Engage parents, community leaders, local health or social services to support the school`s counselling
initiatives.
6. The head teacher and senior staff should model approachability, empathy, and fairness- showing that emotional well-being is valued as much as academic success.
By applying these strategies, school can make a shared responsibility and ensured that learners receive consistent emotional and social support.
3. I support learners and staff by creating a caring and inclusive environment where emotional a d behavioural needs are recognised early and addressed appropriately . When a learner shows signs of distress or behavioural challenges, i first listen attentively to understand the root cause.
For staff , i encourage open communication and peer support providing opportunities to discuss challenges and share solutions, By promoting empathy, teamwork, and consistent teamwork.
4. Yes i remember a learner who was very withdrawn and struggling with low self-esteem after repeated poor exam results. Through regular counselling sessions, i listened to their concerns, encouraged them to set small achievable goals, and help them focus on their strengths rather than failures. Over time the learner became more confident, started participating actively in class and improved academically. That experience showed me how guidance and counselling can transform a learner`s outlook and motivation., positively impacting their life both inside and outside.
