Effective stakeholder engagement is essential for improving school performance and fostering shared responsibility. In Unit 3, strategies such as open communication, inclusive decision-making, regular feedback, and community partnerships were emphasized as key elements in building sustainable relationships between schools and their stakeholders.
From my experience at Yundum Barracks Lower Basic School, strong community involvement has greatly enhanced the school’s performance. For example, the active participation of parents and the School Management Committee in organizing a school cleaning and kitchen renovation exercise created a sense of ownership and pride among community members. This joint effort improved the school’s learning environment and motivated both teachers and pupils, leading to increased attendance and enhanced school feeding program.
However, engaging stakeholders was not without challenges. Some parents initially showed low participation due to work schedules and lack of awareness of their roles in school development. These challenges were addressed by introducing flexible meeting times and using WhatsApp groups to share information and encourage involvement.
Based on the unit, additional strategies that could strengthen school-community partnerships include capacity-building workshops for parents, partnerships with local NGOs, and establishing recognition programs to appreciate active stakeholders. These initiatives can help sustain long-term engagement and promote a collaborative culture focused on improving pupils’ learning outcomes.
