4 Lesson planning for inclusive virtual lab activities
Completion requirements

In this fourth module, you'll shift your focus to strategies for creating more equitable and inclusive learning opportunities, including avoiding gender-based bias in STEAM teaching.
You'll review principles of Universal Design for Learning and guidelines for making your lessons more inclusive through multiple means of engagement, representation, and action and expression. You'll consider the challenges in ensuring STEAM learning is both welcoming and relevant to women and girls, as well as specific issues related to the learning of men and boys in STEAM. Finally, you'll apply these principles as you assess virtual lab and simulation-enhanced activities in your own teaching.
At the end of this module's activities, you will be able to:
- apply principles of Universal Design for Learning to create inclusive learning opportunities for your students,
- identify gender stereotypes and biases in teaching, as well as strategies and practical steps to overcome them, and
- assess the practicality and effectiveness of virtual lab and simulation activities in your STEAM teaching.
There are three discussion forums for this module, where you'll be asked:
- how would you make a lesson more inclusive?
- how effective has your discipline been in applying principles of gender-equity, or who would be an inspiring role model to overcome gender stereotypes for your students?
- which assessment techniques would be easy or challenging for you to apply within your own teaching?
